IP profile

THE MONSTERS (Labubu)

By Kasing Lung (龙家升) · since 2015

The Monsters is a tribe of forest spirits — Labubu, Zimomo, Tycoco, Spooky, Mokoko and Pato — first dreamt up for a 2015 picture book inspired by Nordic folklore. Labubu's look is ugly-cute: bunny ears, jagged grin, pastel fur. Mischievous, but not malicious. The IP went global in April 2024 after BLACKPINK's Lisa was photographed with a Labubu bag charm, kicking off a worldwide craze.

Created by the Hong Kong-born illustrator Kasing Lung, The Monsters is the biggest line Shelfd tracks: 118 series and counting, from the vinyl plush pendants that fuelled the boom (Exciting Macaron, Big Into Energy) to 1000%-scale MEGA Labubu statement pieces. Sell-outs are routine, and secrets trade well above retail. The most expensive Labubu ever sold is a human-sized 131 cm (4 ft 4 in) tall Labubu figurine that fetched a record-breaking $150,324.
